According to the "Prose Edda," Jörmungandr is depicted as an enormously large serpent, imbued with evil powers alongside the giant wolf Fenrir and the deity Hel. The chief god Odin perceived these three offspring of Loki as significant threats to Asgard and potential sources of world destruction, thus devising separate plans to suppress them. Odin took advantage of Jörmungandr's youth and cast it into the bottomless depths of the sea encircling the human world. However, the serpent had already grown immensely in size, and when it extended its body, it managed to bite its tail at the other end of the deep sea (forming the shape of an ouroboros). Unable to escape the sea, Jörmungandr had no choice but to coil its body tightly, encircling the entire earthly realm of Midgard, hence earning the title of the "World Serpent."
